We celebrated All Saints today, and had a wee think about the Saints of The Church. Peter who dened Jesus and who was called "satan" by Our Lord. Paul, who persecuted the Church and happily watched Stephen being stoned to death, and a mysoginist to boot. (Certainly not into an "inclusive church"!) St Thomas Aquinas, a glutton and objectionable character if ever there was one. Our own St Augustine, a promiscuous, wayward drunk, who broke his mother's heart. Or how about David our psalmist? He "knew" Jonathan. So we can have a homosexual psalmist but not a homosexual bishop?
And then we thought of the other saints, the ones with shiny faces who sit in our pews and clean the toilets and work their knuckles to the bone in the service of Jesus. So, we're just having a special day for All These Souls, who are actually saints, and we'll remember them all individually at our Requiem tomorrow!
